Professional and Community Outreach

The Institute of Gerontology is engaged in a variety of professional and community outreach efforts at many levels - locally, statewide, regionally, and nationally.

Community outreach efforts encompass a range of activities, including education for the public as well as for health care professionals and presentations from gerontology faculty to local groups.

The Institute plans and co-sponsors activities with organizations such as the Athens Community Council on Aging, Learning In Retirement, and the Georgia Division of Aging Services. Recent examples include a Long-Term Care Planning Seminar in Athens, and a statewide conference held in Atlanta to develop an academic-practice partnership to continue the momentum of the White House Conference on Aging.

Our students and faculty work with older adults in many different settings, including university clinics, and they participate in local community efforts such as the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk and the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program.
